Words by Cate Chapman, Fruition Stylist.
I feel so grateful to have been chosen as one of this year’s Hair Biz Hot Shot winners. I put together a submission that demonstrated why I am an industry Fashionista and I was awarded the grand prize! As part this,I travelled to Sydney to spend 3 days working along side my fellow winners and some of the industry’s most talented and dedicated hairdressers. Want to know what I got up to? Just read on below..
Day 1: Soon after arriving at the house and catching up with everyone, industryicon Tracey Hughes arrived at the house to share the journey and evolution of Tracey Hughes Education and the empire she has created. Tracey Hughes is one truly inspiring woman and took the time to ask each of us what our aspirations and dreams were. Super Session Stylist, Sarah Laidlaw, came in next with her words of wisdom and shared her experience from a totally different aspect of the hairdressing world. THEN the legendary Sharon Blain, a truly creative soul, shared all of her ‘out-of-the-box’ ideas on creating intricate and innovative hair.
After soaking in all in our mentors Lee Cohen, Tracey Bazzano and Linda Woodhead spent the night with us‘bonding’. Cute!
Day 2:The following day was a big one, and that’s an understatement! The day started with a visit from Pete Walstab and Adam Lee from Excellent Edges, joined by Sydney salon owner Stevie English, bearing gifts of epic proportions including scissor kits worth $5000 and a morning of training on how best to use our new weapons to enhance and improve our skills. Motivating words from Dario Cotroneo and Sam Overton, leaving us all a little exhausted (in a good way!)… feelingthe weight of our heavy brains.
Day 3:Our final day in the house arrived and it was time to put all of our new found knowledge in a photoshoot! Beautiful, wearable, raw and natural was the brief and the four of us were given a model each, forming an incredible collection that can be seen in the latest issue of Hair Biz mag… we’ll have several copies in the salon and so, if you want to check it out, just ask your Fruition stylist J
It was such a thrill spending three days with the very people I have been looking up to for the last 10 years of my life (that’s six years before I even started my apprenticeship!). My time in the house has helped me realise that dreams not only come true but they can be bigger and better than you ever imagined.
